About Lei Lupea's Founder
Brynly Brown
Born on Maui and raised on Hawai'i Island, I learned at a young age that lei are living expressions of our cultural identity. In my upbringing, we understood that making, giving, and receiving lei are not mere traditions, but deeply woven threads of familial and community connection. It is an art form passed down through generations, learned through quiet observation, cherished teachings, and a profound reverence for our ancestral wisdom. Each lei becomes a narrative, carefully crafted to honor moments, emotions, and the intricate relationships that define Hawaiian life.
My journey began in our family's garden, where I was taught to distinguish native and introduced species, understanding that every strand embodies a connection and every bloom captures a moment of significance. I established Lei Lupea to honor my ancestral legacy and share the Hawaiian tradition of conveying emotions through vibrant botanical narratives. This venture allows me to celebrate and perpetuate our deeply rooted cultural tradition, inviting others to experience the depth and beauty of lei.
Each lei I craft is a personal story—made with care, joy, and appreciation. These living compositions are more than adornments; they are symbols of love, respect, and the interconnectedness of life, carrying the mana of their creator and the essence of Hawaii's natural beauty. Whether worn during significant milestones or in everyday life, lei serve as a universal symbol of affection and human connection, reflecting the profound cultural values of Hawaiian society.
Brynly lives and works with her family and three dogs in Waimea, a Hawaii Island town known for its Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). She sources most of her lei materials from her familyʻs lei garden and surrounding environment, with her ultimate goal to obtain all lei-making elements from her personal family garden. Lei from Lei Lupea are eco-friendly and can be returned to the 'āina; they are not constructed with any wire, synthetic materials, or plastic.
